MANILA, Philippines — Globe Telecom Inc., recently has completed a trial phase for the utilization of the TV white space radio frequency to efficiently provide wireless broadband access to remote rural areas in the country.

Emmanuel Estrada, the Globe Telecom senior vice president for network technologies strategy, said that the aforemetioned frequency allowed the telco to provide a wireless broadband access to a certain areas where it was not commercially feasible to install and deploy traditional broadband infrastructure.

“Once in place, the technology is expected to provide an alternative wireless network that will provide data connectivity in far flung areas in Visayas and Mindanao,” the telecommunication and ISP company said.

Estrada also noted that the trials were in support of Globe Telecom’s vision “to maximize available spectrum” given the rapidly increasing demand in data consumption.

For starters, the TV White Space refers to the unused television channels between the active ones in the VHF and UHF spectrum. These are referred to as the “buffer” channels and would be placed between active TV channels to protect broadcasting interference.

It has since been researched and proven that this unused spectrum can be used to provide broadband Internet access while operating harmoniously with surrounding TV channels. With the use of a database manager and a White Space radio frequency, these channels can be used to access wireless broadband Internet connectivity.

Globe Telecom said that the trials were undertaken in partnership with the Information and Communications Technology Office of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and with Canada-based NuRAN Wireless Inc., over the previous eight months in a number of remote locations in the archipelago including Cebu and Bohol.

The equipment from NuRAN, the supplier of mobile and broadband wireless solutions, generated up to 10 Mbps over distance of seven and 12 kilometers.
