Pangasinan, Philippines — Five alleged carnapper from a syndicate based in Manila and Baguio City were killed in a shootout with the cops after the car thieves ignored a checkpoint along the national highway in Barangay Nancayasan in this Urdaneta early on Sunday.

Senior Superintendent Ronald Oliver-Lee, the police provincial director, said that he identified the four among the suspects as Jomay delos Santos and Ronnie Chico of Arcenas of the San Miguel, Bulacan; Arnold Pilo-Badera from Agusan del Sur; and Gilbert Bacuna-Fiomico of Santa Mesa, in Manila. However, the fifth suspect remained unidentified.

The PNP provincial director has said that the five suspects were the responsible for several unsolved car thefts, robberies and hijacks in Calabarzon region, National Capital Region, Central Luzon, Ilocos Region and Cordillera Administrative Region.

Lee added that before the shootout in Urdaneta City, those five suspects were spotted along MacArhur Highway in Baguio City in a silver-colored Toyota Innova carrying the NRQ 496 plate number near their speculated hideout.

The PNP then coordinated with various police stations in both La Union and Pangasinan to make a checkpoint along the MacArhur highway going to NCR.

Policemen in Urdaneta City led by Superintendent Marceliano Desamito Jr., the city chief of PNP, together with Task Force Limbas of Highway Patrol Group provincial intelligence branch and other security channels, flagged down at the checkpoint the suspects’ Innova at about 2:30 AM on Sunday. However, instead of stopping, the five suspects sped away.

The policemen quickly followed the Innova until the the suspects were cornered in a ricefield at the Barangay Nancalobasaan in Urdaneta City.

The PNP asked the five suspects to surrender peacefully, but the car thieves started shooting towards the policemen.

In the crime scene, the PNP Urdaneta City recovered two plastic sachets of illegal drugs, four .45 caliber pistols, several empty shells, two pieces of police uniforms and among personal belongings.

Provincial police in Celtral Luzon’s Bulacan, Tarlac and Pampanga as well as in Pangasinan claimed that the five suspects had also stolen automotive vehicles in Bulacan, Pampanga and Tarlac.

Lee also added that some alleged victims of the suspects from NCR, Bulacan, Bataan and Laguna may report to the Pangasinan police district because they may have been victims of the same group car thieves.
