First NEDA board under Duterte Administration approves 48.6KM BRT system in NCR

Manila, Philippines – The 48.6-kilometer Metro Manila Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) was approved by the Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte during the first meeting of National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Board under the Duterte administration on Wednesday, September 14. NEDA is headed by the President Duterte as chairman of the board, along with the Secretary of Socio-Economic Planning, concurrently NEDA Director-General, as vice-chairman.

The Bus Rapid Transit, a segregated busway system, project is estimated to cost P37.8 billion with an implementation period of within three years. The Metro Manila BRT project is expected to be operational in year 2020.

“The project aims to provide alternative mass transit in Metro Manila by establishing a BRT system within an EDSA route of 48.6 kilometers covering Monumento up to Diosdado Macapagal Avenue/Roxas Boulevard, with integrated routes between the Ortigas Business District, Bonifacio Global City, and the Makati Business District.”

NEDA also planned to link the Bus Rapid Transit with the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) terminals and include off-corridors to the target Integrated Transport System terminals in the North, South and Southwest of the National Capital Region, and in the vicinity of SM City Fairview.

The said project involves the construction of dedicated lanes with busways, depots, and more than 63 terminals. The project will also procure high-quality and high-capacity buses, install smart signaling system at road intersections and central control system, and it will also provide a contact-less automatic fare collection system.

The Bus Rapid Transit project is one of the nine accepted projects that will ring up a total estimated cost of P171.14 billion and include those focused on transport infrastructure as well as health and agriculture.
